What are mental health concerns?

Mental health concerns can include both emotional problems and behavioural problems. Emotional problems may include concerns about mood (usually sadness) or concerns about anxiety. Behaviour problems can include concerns with anger, violence or difficulties paying attention. All children and youth may experience brief problems with some or all of these, but when the problems start to interfere with school, family, or everyday living,  it may be time to seek help.

Mental health problems can seriously impair a child’s ability to be successful at school and in their relationships with their peers and family.  When left untreated, mental health problems can lead to school failure, family conflicts, drug & alcohol abuse, violence or even suicide. Mental health problems are treatable.
